Genesis

The Organisation is named after Brother.Sigamani, a Selessian Brother. It is he who inspired a group of youth in Vyasarpadi, (Previous Madras, and present Chennai) twenty years back for social action. He instilled in them the spirit of service --the service we provide to others is the rent we pay to the Creator for the abode we enjoy in this world. To honour this great man and to reflect our gratitude, an Organisation was started, when he left for South Africa, and named it Bro.Siga Social Service Guild. BSSSG services to 6234 families and 26773 populations with the support of TdH NL.

The Life Line:

What was started with three Night Schools and an Ambulance service is now grown and spread to a substantial size.  It works now in two target areas, which are contrasts in constitution.  One is a city slum – Vyasarpadi, in Chennai.  The others is a cluster of villages in the interior Uthiramerur, in Kanchipuram District.  Raising the standard and status of people in both the Communities, is the prime objective.  With this ground rule, it has adopted the strategy, which the Development Experts have prescribed – Promotion of Literacy, Health, Women empowerment, and physical development of the area—the major components of Development.  In both areas, the same pattern of work is followed.  And from the beginning, Terre des Hommes is the only supporter.

Operation Chart:

Vyasarpadi

Literacy Programme:

Vyasarpadi is one of the oldest and largest slums of Chennai City, with over fifty thousand population.  The Literacy promotion programme runs in three streams:

  • Early Learning Centers—annual strength 311, in 10 ELC centres put together 3-5 years age group kids benefit.

  • Study Centres for disadvantaged school children up to school final class.  Comfortable place to sit and study and academic assistance provided, for those children who otherwise have no access to it.

The children in study centres are never allowed to dropout from school, no matter, what reasons.  If they do, they are readmitted.  Among these disadvantaged slum children, who passed through BSSSG study centers, there are top achievers.

Vocational Training:

Tailoring Training for Women is provided in the premises of the Central Office.  15 sewing machines – For male youth, any skill they opt.  Assistance provided.

Health Program:

The second ingredient of Development agenda is health.  A team of 6 CHWs has brought down maternal mortality to zero level.  Significant reduction in anemia and low birth weight babies.  Complete Immunisation record.  All these through house visits, hundreds of sensitization meetings, exhibitions, nutrition supply and medical check up.

Socio –Economic development Programme:

57 Women and Men Groups have been formed. Micro credits are being disbursed on need and  micro Enterprises are in operation.

Uthiramerur in Kanchipuram Dist (Rural Project) IN: 036H

The inhabitants are Erulas (a hill tribe who lived happily in forests catching snakes  and eating rats, but were indirectly evicted due to a Government law) Quarry workers who brave sum and showers and sometimes bonded labour, and others who fall on the last rung of the caste ladder.

The same formula of Development as in slum is followed.

BSSSG services to 4148 families and 15646 populations with the support of TdH NL.

Literacy Programme:

  1. ELC – annual strength 244, in 8 centers
  2. Study center – over 600 school going children
  3. Community College

In the highly competitive jobs market mere degrees – art and science – are losing relevance.  But technical qualifications count.  The village youth who pass out from schools, cannot afford the high fees and huge donations charged by Technical Institutions.  Hence, for their benefits a Community College functions in Uthiramerur in Kanchipuram Dist.

Trades offered under Community College Scheme:

  1. Diploma in Computer Education(DTP)
  2. Medical Laboratory Technology  (DMLT)
  3. Diploma in Four wheeler mechanism (Automobile)
  4. Diploma in House Electrician
  5. Diploma in Welding

Hostel facilities also are offered.

A well qualified team of teaching staff is in place.

  1. Mr. Sargunam –   MCA. M.Phil.
  2. Mr. John Peter –  Diploma in ITI
  3. Mr. Thambiran – Diploma in ITI
  4. Mr. Vinayagamoorthy – MSC, DMLT
  5. Mr. Mageswaran –  Diploma ITI
  6. Mr. Janarthanan  - Diploma in ITI

Health Programme:

The life of the villagers is conditioned by aged –old customs, deep – rooted beliefs, die –hard convention and misconceptions.  The community health workers have to penetrate through this barrier.

Recapitulation:

The physical conditions of the slum punctuated by stagnant water pools covered with the swam of mosquitoes, and garbage heaps infested with the cloud of flies and slushy lanes, had become a thing of the past, due to natural development, Government intervention and our efforts in the span of long 15 years.
