Summer Camp
SIVA Trust conducted a 5-days summer camp for the students under their care was organized in the premises of the Government Higher Secondary School, Thirumalapuram, Tirunelveli, Tamilnadu from May 12 to 16, 2010. This exercise was taken up as a continuation of the earlier similar training given to them at Palayamkottai in the month of January, 2010 for 3 days. This camp was attended by 167 students (95 boys & 72 girls) from our 12 supplementary tuition centres and 61 students (48 boys & 13 girls) from our NFE centres as well as 28 teaching staff of the Trust.

The main resource persons in the camp were, Mr.Chanduru, former Principal, Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai and Mr.Kadhir, Founder, ‘Chithiramum Kaipazhakkam’ (for drawing); Mr.V.Sankararam, Tamil Teacher, Gomathi Ambal Govt Higher Secy School, Sankarankovil (for story telling); Mr.Amirthalingam (for clay toy making); Mr.Bala (for street drama); Mr.Rajandas, Coordinator, STAND, St. Xavier’s College, Palayamkottai (for traditional arts); Mr.M.S.Mathialagan, Coordinator, Thamirabarani Kalai Kuzhu, Tirunelveli (for song recital) and SIVA Trust staff team (for traditional dances and games).
A total of 86 students took training in drawing and creative arts, 31 in traditional dances, 57 in drama and singing and 54 in traditional games. The inherent abilities of the students were brought out by this camp and they got confidence that they would be able to teach the subject they learnt to other students in their villages also. In the valedictory function conducted on the final day, an exhibition of the drawings and clay models done by the trainees was arranged and the guests and parents of the children appreciated the creative art forms made by the students. Indeed it was a novel experience for the people of that area. They were vocal in expressing their surprise and appreciation over the welcome change brought about in the area by the activities of SIVA Trust. They also enjoyed the dance, drama and songs programmes organized by the trainees in the function, clearly indicating the qualitative changes in the presentation, as a result of the training they got. The occasion was also used to deal with the subject of women empowerment and the need for total abolition of child labour system in the area. The function was also addressed by Mr.T.T.Ramesh Raja and Mrs.Vasantha Mohan (Builders from Tirunelveli), Mr.Vijayakumar (Retd. Director, Forensic Science Dept, Chennai), Dr.T.S.Rajeswari (Professor, APC Mahalakshmi College, Tuticorin), Mr.P.Isakkimuthu (Retd. Professor, PMT College, Melaneelithanallur), Mr.Millath Mohammed Ismail (Founder, Minnal Trust, Tirunelveli) and Mr.K. Muthu Pandian (State Treasurer, Tamilnadu Primary Coop Bank Employees Union). All of them praised the SIVA Trust for rendering service in such a backward block and for bringing out remarkable changes in the lives of the public. .

Mr.S.S.Shiva, Project Director thanked them for their good words, explained the motto of TdH-NL and SIVA Trust in helping the poor sections of the society and requested for the fullest cooperation of the people of the area to the efforts of SIVA Trust. He agreed to concede the suggestion to start a coaching centre for competitive exams for jobs to benefit the unemployed youth in the area. He thanked all the staff members for whatever achievement SIVA Trust could make in that area. The function was attended by sizeable number of women SHG members and parents of the children under our care from neighbouring villages.
The central level community play mela will be held in Mathagonappalli Model School Campus on 18 November 2010 . The theme of the community play for this year, “Inclusive Development through Play”.
